Rep. Rick Larsen on media consolidation

[Congressman Rick Larsen sent this message to constituents before the Seattle FCC Hearing.]

I wanted to make sure you were aware that the FCC will be holding a public hearing on media ownership this Friday, November 9th, from 4 PM to 11 PM at Town Hall in Seattle. If you are interested in attending this hearing, you may access the FCC's public hearing notice at www.fcc.gov

As you may know, Northwest residents were only given four business days' notice to prepare for this hearing. I am extremely disappointed that FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is insisting on such a tight schedule for this hearing - media ownership reform is critically important and deserves careful review.

I firmly believe that our democracy benefits from a diversity of viewpoints, and I fully support the separation of media ownership. In 2003, when the FCC submitted a proposal that would have loosened media ownership rules, I cosponsored legislation and submitted a letter to Speaker Dennis Hastert to express my strong opposition to media consolidation in local markets. Although the FCC's current media ownership proposal has not yet been released, I have serious concerns with any rule that would allow significant media consolidation in local markets.

Sincerely,

Rick Larsen
United States Representative
Washington State, 2nd District
