The media workers employed within large media institutions are often the first affected by bad policy changes and cost-cutting measures. Consolidation and covergence threaten the jobs of radio announcers, print journalists and support staff. Many workers at anti-union companies such as Comcast and Clear Channel are effectively denied the right to organize.
In addition, the pro-business-friendly priorities of many media institutions place subtle or overt constraints on labor coverage. Most newspapers run stock market listings and a business section. How many have a labor section? Even PBS notoriously refuses to distribute programs underwritten by unions, in the midst of its ubiquitous corporate sponsorships.
