Washington State Media and Democracy Campaign

Reclaim the Media is a Seattle-based nonprofit organization working for social, racial and economic justice by advocating for progressive media policy, community media access and media literacy. In coordination with other media activist groups nationwide, RTM is launching a Washington State campaign to develop a broad constituency advocating for the public interest in current media policy debates. Current issues include the debate over media ownership consolidation as well as proposed telecommunications legislation concerning net neutrality, cable/video franchising and deployment of broadband services.

This campaign will run through the end of 2006.

Job Title: Organizer

Job Description:

  • Work to build a statewide network of organizations and individuals committed to progressive media policy change, in a 5-month campaign focused on federal telecommunications policy and media ownership debates.
  • Help disseminate campaign messages and materials to an expanding network of contacts
  • Recruit and develop a list of network peers wo will sign on to a collective campaign statement and commit to advocacy activities. Recruit among community leaders from statewide progressive activist communities, labor unions, local government and business communities.
  • Work with Reclaim the Media to develop campaign materials.
  • Organize and lead one or more public educational meetings on media policy issues.
  • Work with Reclaim the Media to develop campaign materials.
  • Help identify and pursue strategic campaign outreach opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to fighting for social, racial, and economic justice.
  • Experience working with people of varied backgrounds.
  • Experience with or strong interest in community media and/or media/communications policy.
  • Strong verbal, listening, and written communication skills.
  • Experience doing community, labor, canvass or electoral organizing.
  • Experience with and commitment to working on racial justice issues and/or working in communities of color.
  • Strong personal time management skills
  • Language skills a plus.

Compensation:

  • Monthly stipend.
