Backing, hisses for media consolidation

Media executives and a passionate crowd of media consumers gathered in Seattle yesterday to discuss the prospect of big companies amassing even larger collections of TV stations, radio stations and newspapers.

More than 250 people showed up for the Federal Communications Commission field hearing held on the University of Washington campus. Many people in the crowd were decidedly against media consolidation -- some of them literally hissing whenever any large media conglomerate's name was mentioned....

Move to ease media-ownership rules given a cool reception in Seattle

They came from San Francisco, Salem, Bellingham, Bellevue.
And two Federal Communications Commissioners came from Washington, D.C., to hear them.

The issue: whether the nation's airwaves and newspapers should be opened up to more buying and selling by media groups.

The answer, at least in this city, seemed to be a resounding no.

"The broadcast media are not serving this community in the way their broadcast licenses require them to," declared Seattle City Councilman Jim Compton, a former TV correspondent. "Out-of-town owners back a pickup truck to the loading dock at the local station and fill it up with money and take it out of this community. That's money that should stay here to do quality broadcasting..."

FCC conducts hearings on media outlet ownership

A pair of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) commissioners are worried that people are missing the debate about how many media outlets can be owned by a single company. Therefore, the commissioners are taking their show on the road, stopping off Friday in Seattle.

Many fear fewer owners could mean fewer places to have their voices heard.
